View Full Version : Calculate capacitor current knowing only V and C?

hi everybody,

I am going thru the questions and this is probably simple but I am really having trouble trying to do the math with this question

A capacitor has a capacitance of 100 microfarads on a 120V 60Hz line, how much current flows through the capacitor?

Can anybody help with the formula the correct answer is 4.52A

Hi zofofg, this equation is a two part process. In order to calculate how much current is in the circuit we must first calculate the capacitive reactance:

Xc = 1 / (2 * pi * frequency (in hz) * capacitance (in farads)) -> 1 / (2*3.14*60*0.0001) = 26.52 ohms

Now that we know the resistance of the circuit, a simple ohms law calculation will give us the current:

I = E/R -> I = 120/26.52 -> I = 4.52

Edits: sorry, I keep getting my Xc calculation screwed up.
