Aluminium oxide sandpaper strips is what we used back when I was a cable splicer.
After sanding, we cleaned thoroughly with alcohol and we applied 3M silicone grease.
That was many years ago, so things may have changed.

Another thing we did was to sand the conductor dull with the same aluminium oxide tape and used a product called Penetrox.
Because aluminium oxidizes in about 1/10th of a second, to make a good contact, we applied the Penetrox on the aluminium conductor, sanded it with the aluminium oxide sandpaper and crimped it right after.
Again, I am not sure if this method is still in use.

Important note: Penetrox was for the conductor, not the insulator!
We applied 3M silicone grease to the insulator.
did you have this on your NETAIV exam?
