Which of the following is used to suppress the reverse polarity voltage spike in an electrical relay?

I've seen Fly-back/Recirculation diodes used to prevent the reverse polarity and voltage spikes associated with introduction of inductors in a circuit. Those along with Thyristors would be sufficient, not sure if any of the above quoted would even address the reverse polarity aspect.
